NAIDOC Week 2025 at Liontown
17/07/2025From 6 – 13 July 2025, Liontown celebrated NAIDOC Week, recognising 50 years of a movement that has driven progress, strengthened communities and shaped conversations. This year’s theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” commemorated not only the achievements of the past but the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors.
As our Kathleen Valley site is situated on Tjiwarl land, in a culturally and environmentally significant region, we have built strong relationships with the Tjiwarl community and culture. We acknowledge the importance of connecting with this key national celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and the future they are building. Our full week of events was organised by Community and Aboriginal Employment Lead, Jeremy Neesham and Community and Aboriginal Advisor, Lily Grace.
At the Perth Office, on Tuesday 8 July, Kado Muir, a respected Senior Tjiwarl Traditional Owner, spoke about the cultural significance of Tjiwarl Country and the importance of sharing knowledge with future generations. Liontown employees valued the chance to learn directly from a Traditional Owner, gaining deeper insights into Country and culture.
Throughout NAIDOC Week, on-site dinners were also prepared featuring Indigenous flavours and ingredients. The meal rotation included dishes such as lemon myrtle and native pepper leaf hollandaise, native herb damper, kangaroo burgers and many more.
A staple in our NAIDOC Week programming, Liontown employees and contractors undertook cultural awareness training to strengthen and deepen their understanding and appreciation of Tjiwarl culture and history.
On Thursday 10 July 2025, Tjiwarl member Rob Binsiar hosted a paint & sip evening where Kathleen Valley personnel had a chance to express their creativity and unwind while creating cultural art. The following evening continued this streak of creativity, as the team learned the art of necklace making with Yvonne Ashwin. To finish the week, Henry Ashwin put on a huge live music show at the Dragonfly Pavilion.
Liontown’s involvement in this year’s NAIDOC Week celebrations has provided a chance to learn more about the incredible history and culture of Kathleen Valley.
